October…not just for Halloween anymore

It goes without saying that when most people think of October, they think of fall things. Things like pumpkin spice everything, football, cooler weather, Halloween and hoodies. Not Old Dominion, at least not as far as I can tell. This group of gentlemen has been ON IT as far as Octobers go, and it goes without saying that October 2021 will be no exception. More on that later…for now, I can be your navigator as we roll through the many OD October miracle mile-stones which include front man and lead singer, Matthew Ramsey’s birthday (October 21, 1977).

On October 7, 2014, the band releases their self-titled EP, produced by Shane McAnally. This project would garner (so far) one RIAA gold single, Nowhere Fast, and one RIAA platinum single, Break Up With Him. It would also include lead single, Shut Me Up, a video for which was also released in that same month. Fast forward to the following year and you’ll find that OD has signed a record deal and opened on the road for Kenny Chesney. Old Dominion turned this little one horse into Vegas by announcing and releasing their debut album, Meat and Candy, which was certified platinum on October 22, 2020 and includes 2x platinum single, Snapback, which was also certified on October 22, 2020.

Not wasting another mile or a minute, the fine gents of OD set out for some smooth sailing into their next string of memorable Octobers. Including the radio debut of the lead single, Make It Sweet, from their third album, self-titled Old Dominion. The certified gold single was sent to radio on October 8, 2018 (take note of this particular date). After announcing the album’s release earlier in the year, OD3 was released on October 25, 2019 and we will never be sorry for loving it.

After a couple of Matthew trips around the sun, the fab five began teasing fans that a new album was coming “soon.” Swept up in the blue, we waited patiently, said nobody, while OD dropped clips of what was to come…lions and tigers and crossed-eyed bears, oh my! After some time, tequila and therapy (you’ve been there), the Kings of October announced that their highly anticipated fourth album, aptly named Time, Tequila and Therapy, would be released on October 8, 2021 (did you take note of that particular date?). You know what this means, right? That on October 7, 2021, seven years to the day that they released their self-titled EP, Old Dominion will midnight mess around and gift us with TT&T.

Move over PSL (pumpkin spice latte), the too early Christmas displays and trunk and treats, because Old Dominion fits October like blue jeans….no hard feelings.

Be The Ripple

Over the last few weeks, I’ve found myself adrift in the sea of fandom. Not really feeling the breeze on my back, but more like a one man band going nowhere fast. The catalyst for this is really not important; that’s a song for another time (or blog). Wikipedia (I know, I know) defines fandom as “a subculture composed of fans characterized by a feeling of empathy and camaraderie with others who share a common interest. Fans typically are interested in even minor details of the objects of their fandom and spend a significant portion of their time and energy involved with their interest, often as a part of a social network with particular practices, differentiating fandom-affiliated people from those with only a casual interest.” But sometimes the thing you thought was written in the stars, was really just written in the sand, and it can really make you rethink the thing and reasons that drew you to the fandom in the first place. That is were I was…drifting, the joy being sucked out of my sails…until recently, when the still waters began to ripple, a little tide turn.

You “meet” people on social media, whether you follow them, or they follow you. You might share a mutual interest, or you may just appreciate what the other has to offer. A lot of the accounts I follow are music related (shocking, right?) and many of them have followed me back, including one called *crosseyedbear. Well, a few days ago, I received a DM from this mutual. Although I wasn’t surprised, we had never chatted outside of this main social media platform, so it piqued my interest. *crosseyedbear had sent a photo which looked much like playlist would and in the photo was a highlighted line. That highlighted line contained the following information, “I Was On A Boat That Day (New) Old Dominion.” I thought to myself, “Cool, they’re listening to OD!” And then I saw the text under the picture…”I help program the music at *insert major themed restaurant chain.* Added Old Dominion because you are so passionate about them so I checked them out. So if you ever end up at XXXXXXXXX, request some OD!” Now this is someone who obviously does not listen to OD, so just reading that *crosseyedbear took a listen based on my passion for the band was pretty freaking awesome on it’s own. But WHUUUUUTTT?! Added them to their programming? I’m sorry, I don’t care who you are, that’s pretty great. And, I’m not going to lie, it definitely gave me that riding the breeze feeling again! To know that even though your fan voice may be small, it’s still being heard no matter who or what tries to stifle or muzzle it, is amazing…especially when it means the possibility of more people hearing the band behind the fandom. Cake, icing, tequila shots, sun and the rum, all of that.

I’ll wrap this up with the last part of *crosseyedbear’s DM which perfectly sums up exactly what being a singular fan, smooth sailing across the sea of fandom. “I just thought you’d enjoy the story of how fandom can make ripples in the world!” Be the ripple.

*name changed to protect the innocent ๐Ÿ˜‰

And nobody’s paying, we’ll still be playing…

Still be playing OD3, that is, because the only over this album I’ll be is over my dead body. As a new album looms on the horizon, “Pretty soon actually, really soon…” according to Trevor Rosen during an appearance on GMA, I find myself once again wondering, as I do from time to time, if I am completely ready to move on from OD3. I realize that there is no statute of limitations on loving an album, but I do think there is some level of closing a chapter in a song book as you get ready to open a new one. For me, the turning of the proverbial last page of this chapter just seems exceptionally hard.

The OD3 era has been quite the emotional roller coaster ride, not only for the band, but for fans. Well, it has for this one anyways. It saw me through some highs and some really low lows. The music on this album soothed my soul and held my hand. It made my cry. It made me smile BIG. It brought some really amazing people and memories into my life, and helped me get through some of those amazing people deciding not to be a part of my life anymore. OD3 gifted me so much. It gave me my forever favorite song, One Man Band. I’ll never be sorry for loving this album.

Yesterday, during one of our many OD car conversations, my ten year old daughter said something to me that really made me realize that smooth sailing into OD4 doesn’t really have to feel like a “moving on.” She said, “Even though their music sounds different than in the beginning, Matthewโ€™s voice sounds exactly the same. I like that the most.” She’s right (and I like that the most too, kiddo). The warm tone of his voice is always like a “welcome home,” their music always like a big hug, or a high five, or a safe space to laugh or cry. OD3 will be that for me no matter how many albums Old Dominion releases. I realize that while I’ll never be able to fully close the curtain, stack up all of the chairs and dim the spotlight of OD3, I look forward to hearing more of the story that OD4 has to tell.

No hard feelings…no bad vibes. I’ll roll with that.

More New Music…More Girl Power?

When Matthew Ramsey sings, “All I know about girls is you best get out of their way; shut your damn mouth ‘cuz she’s got something to say,” I felt that, both as a girl, albeit a fifty-one year old one, and as a girl mom. Tonight during their acoustic pre-show set, Old Dominion premiered another song off of their much anticipated, and as yet to be titled, fourth album. ‘All I Know About Girls’ is like the five guys in a band version of Lainey Wilson’s, Things A Man Oughta Know.

If I count correctly, the writers have nine daughters between them and one would think that they might know quite about about girls. But then again, my very own father refers to me as a “complex creature.” So, I immediately thought of my father when Matthew wistfully croons “I got a pretty good handle on a lot of things, but I ain’t figured out everything.” Again, felt that…as a girl, a girl mom, and as a daughter.

The melody is sublime. The lyrics are catchy. They make you say, “Yup” “Damn straight” “Amen” because all I know about girls…it’s probably the reason Hemingway drank.

Yes, I felt that too, gentleman.

Empire High Atop The Charts

As we head into another week, we find Old Dominion climbing the country music charts with not just one, but two songs. One, I Was On A Boat That Day, is the song of the summer, at least in my head anyways! The other, I Can’t, is a collaboration with the ever prodigious singer-songwriter, Caitlyn Smith. IWOABTD, the commonly used acronym for I Was On A Boat That Day, is perched, eyeing the prize, at #15 on Mediabase http://www.mediabase.com/mmrweb/allaboutcountry/Charts.asp?format=C1R while I Can’t enters the top 40 at #40…pretty impressive to have two songs charting simultaneously.

Come hell or high water, IWOABTD and I Can’t will most certainly continue their ascent up the charts. With electric energy and a trajectory much like the band’s previous number one, One Man Band, IWOABTD will likely peak at #1, possibly sometime mid-fall if not sooner. And I, for one, Can’t wait.

Billboard Country Update for 07.12.2021-The Numbers

IWOABTD has been out for seven weeks now (how?!), and it’s been getting its float on since hitting the waves, the airwaves that is, in May. Today’s BB Country Update stats:

BB Hot Country Songs – up four spots from #26 to #22

Most Increased Audience (in millions) – +1.791

But the best news…the boat has sailed into the BB Hot 100, making its debut at #91! This puts Old Dominion on the Hot 100 chart for the 9th time! Ahoy! and cheers to IWOABTD just letting the sun and the rum do what it does…
