When Matthew Ramsey sings, “All I know about girls is you best get out of their way; shut your damn mouth ‘cuz she’s got something to say,” I felt that, both as a girl, albeit a fifty-one year old one, and as a girl mom. Tonight during their acoustic pre-show set, Old Dominion premiered another song off of their much anticipated, and as yet to be titled, fourth album. ‘All I Know About Girls’ is like the five guys in a band version of Lainey Wilson’s, Things A Man Oughta Know.
If I count correctly, the writers have nine daughters between them and one would think that they might know quite about about girls. But then again, my very own father refers to me as a “complex creature.” So, I immediately thought of my father when Matthew wistfully croons “I got a pretty good handle on a lot of things, but I ain’t figured out everything.” Again, felt that…as a girl, a girl mom, and as a daughter.
The melody is sublime. The lyrics are catchy. They make you say, “Yup” “Damn straight” “Amen” because all I know about girls…it’s probably the reason Hemingway drank.
Yes, I felt that too, gentleman.
